Not entirely, but there was certainly a strong element of revenge for the defeat and terms that had been forced on them in the aftermath of the Franco-Prussian War 40 years earlier. As much as the Germans b*tched about the treaty (and still are for that matter), the fact is that if the Ludendorff Offensive had succeeded (and it damn near did) and they had been dictating terms to the French, the French would not have gotten off as easily as the Germans did.
