Can you just put concrete onto soil?

Ok I am concreting a shed floor and I have ripped up the existing floor and I have levelled the soil and I was told by a builder that I should put chicken wire so when the soil contracts and expands it wont crack the concrete is this true.and do you just lay the chicken wire over the soil or do you have to have it off the ground like rebar
